- ON Magazine's (formerly Time Digital) article on shareware, "The Kings of Shareware" is out. Click here to read the article online.
- The Big Buggy Brother will certify us. Speaking at a London press conference earlier in November 2000, Jim Ewel, Microsoft VP for IT infrastructure and hosting, announced that the upcoming Windows release ("Whistler") will block any software without a valid digital signature. Not a good news for little shareware programmers. As M$ is unable to write secure applications (you certainly have friends that got the “I Love You” virus due to the Outlook bug), the solution for people security is M$ will certify our applications. I feel very secure. It’s sad.
- Corel goes shareware. One of Corel's most recent moves has been to partner with the world's first evaluation service provider (ESP), Runaware.com. "Evaluation service providers, like Runaware.com provide Corel a new, secure channel for introducing new products," said David McKeen, vice-president of business development and corporate Web strategy. "Our customers can experience the power of our products by testing full feature demos over the Internet."
- Stephen King goes shareware. Stephen King is using shareware to market his last book. He relies on the honor system and asks 1$ for each user that downloads the first chapter of this book. He will continue the book only if the registration rate will be over the 75%.
- The ASP launches the PAD standard. It is sufficient to take a look to the shareware sites’ list to realize that to fill that hundred of forms takes a long long time. The PAD standard will avoid this. With the free PAD editor authors can set up an information file that contains all info, and can be sent to shareware sites. Some shareware sites can also poll that PAD file on your Web site, thus assuring they will have even the last version of your software’s specs.
