SOFTWARE REGISTRATION INCENTIVES
|
|
|
Although there are many people for which the old “honor system” still works, it is better to introduce some incentives to keep the rest of the honest people honest.
Here a list of possible incentives (you can mix them):
- stop the software after N days or N uses (you can use the registry or spare files to keep track)
- place some “nag screen”, i.e. sometimes show a window that remembers to the user that he is still using an “unregistered” release, and he need to register; you can show this screens at startup, at the program exit, every 10 minutes, or when some functions are used. The key is to strike a balance between too often, and not often enough. Remember also to place a “buy” link within this window.
- if your software manages texts or images you can add some “watermark”, i.e. you can print “unregistered” on all images, or add “created with PippoLippo *Unregistered*” to all texts
- place some “register” and “buy” options in the menu, and even some buttons in the main program window.
- add advertising to the trial; the user will register to stop these annoying ads
- in the registered edition, show the user name in the splash screen / about window
